Organic Food wins for Presentation
24.06.02
Newbury’s Castle School won the Best Presentation award in the
recent Regional Final of the 2002 Food and Farming Challenge. The school’s
team worked with Sainsbury’s and Sheepdrove Organic Farm investigating
organic eating habits and presented their findings to a judging panel
in the Long Gallery of Englefield House, Theale.
The Food and Farming Challenge is a scheme that prepares young people
for adult working life by providing schools with genuine projects and
problem solving activities set by organisations associated with food,
farming and the countryside.
The Newbury and District Agricultural Society sponsors the annual Regional
Final as part of its education programme to give young people a better
understanding of agriculture and the countryside. Regional organisers,
West Berkshire Education Business Partnership, work with local companies
to set the challenges and match them with local schools.
Cox Green School from Maidenhead was the overall winner and their ten-strong
team goes forward to the National Finals on 17th July in Birmingham.
The team, aged 14-15 years, worked with Waitrose investigating and
testing healthy products, prior to the supermarket launching a new ‘Healthy
Eating’ range.
Other West Berkshire schools taking part were: John O’Gaunt from
Hungerford, who worked with the local Chamber of Commerce finding out
local employment opportunities and the skills required; Trinity School,
Newbury, who linked with Hamstead Growers looking at expansion plans
for the ‘Pick Your Own’ nursery.
Judges for the regional final were: Michael Bowden - Chairman of the
Newbury and District Agricultural Society, Chris Emerson - West Berkshire
District Council and Meg Hart from FACE (Farming and Countryside Education).
Charles Ledgerwood, Chair of the Society’s Education Committee
introduced the presentations.
Presenting the prizes Mr Bowden said, “The Society is delighted
once again to be supporting Food and Farming Challenge as it is key
to our aim of helping everyone gain a better understanding of farming
and food production.” Mr Bowden continued, “Selecting a
winner was difficult however we feel Cox Green will be an excellent
ambassador for the County and Castle School’s innovative interview
style deserved Best Presentation.”
