Ploughing Match Schedule

Ploughing Match Form

Around 1000 spectators gathered for Newbury & District Agricultural Society’s (NDAS) Annual Ploughing Match which took place at Barn Elms Farm, Bradfield last weekend (Saturday 18th October).

The event, one of the key activities for the local farming community in the NDAS calendar, is always popular with spectators and around 1000 people enjoyed the autumn sunshine The competition was hosted by the 2008 Chairman of Newbury and District Agricultural Society, Mrs Rosemary Balsdon and her husband Jim.

Visitors enjoyed demonstrations of horse and plough workmanship, ploughing by vintage tractors and modern machinery. One of the best-loved aspects of the match is the sight of the gentle giant Shire horses in action.  Competitors come from across the country to take part and there was a strong representation from local competitors.

Among the youngest was 17 year old Lily Pantry who helps on her father’s farm near Faringdon. “I’ve been ploughing since I could get on a tractor at 13 and doing more and more ever since. Being a girl I’m not as strong as the boys and find some of it hard but I do my best.”

A special presentation was made to Jim Brown from Leckhampstead who has achieved a notable milestone, possibly one that is unique in the country.  He has driven a combine harvester for 65 consecutive years 1944 to 2008.

Record crowds boost ploughing match

Record crowds flocked to the annual Open Ploughing Match.

The spectacle of huge machinery combined with sights of yesteryear and a liberal dose of sunshine turned this traditionally relaxed event into a highlight, as more than 1,000 queued to get into the site at Leckhampstead.

They were able to see demonstrations of horse and plough workmanship, steam powered ploughing, ploughing by vintage tractors, and by the huge machinery of today.

Competitors came from all over the south of England to take part, however amidst stiff competition it was local competitors who took the overall spoils.

David Jannaway, from Welford Farms took the BS Povey Cup for the overall champion, having come first in class 7 for reversible ploughs and also having won best ploughing with a Kverneland plough. This is the second time he has won the overall title.

Meanwhile, while the PJS Cup for the champion vintage ploughman went to Roy Breakspeare from Wantage, making light of the particularly sticky conditions which greeted the vintage ploughmen on their half of the site.

Local success also came with John Hiscock, from Leckhampstead, who won class six for reversible ploughs (Newbury & District Agricultural Society Rules).

Ploughing match organiser, Steve Ormrod, said: “We were very very pleased with the event and delighted that so many people turned up - both competitors and individuals. There was a lovely atmosphere and we had positive and constructive comments from everybody, so we're sure we can use those to build on our success next year”.

The Ploughing Match was hosted jointly by Peter and Diana Amesbury, and Richard Griffith-Jones, the current president of the Society.
