Shetland Ponies make a dash to the Royal County of Berkshire Show!

We are pleased to be welcoming back the Shetland Pony Grand National to the Royal County of Berkshire Show this year.

A high speed dash over miniature steeplechase fences, a blur of coloured silks, flying manes and tails, the roar of the crowd and the excitement of a day at the races all condensed into Shetland pony size.

The Shetland Pony Grand National was brought to life by the famous BBC commentator, the late Raymond Brooks-Ward back in 1981 and is an organisation that raises money each year for a nominated charity. Last year the children raised £38,500 for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and hopefully will be doing the same this year as they continue to support the charity.

The ponies and their young jockeys come from all over the UK and travel the length and breadth of the country during the season all hoping to be one of the lucky 11 riders and ponies who qualify for Olympia, The London International Horse Show in December.

More than 50 ponies start the season all hoping to be the lucky 11 to reach Olympia. The build up to each race is much the same as the real Grand National. The ponies are paraded, jockeys mount and are led down to the start before being sent on their way over 2 ½ laps incorporating 12 ‘mini’ steeplechase fences.

All the Children who take part are aged between 9 and 14 years and have a keen interest in ponies and may well move into horseracing. Its great fun for them but also a great opportunity to experience how jockeys train and prepare for races.

Sebastian Garner, who organises the Shetland Pony Grand National, comments “we are very pleased to be returning to the Royal County of Berkshire Show. This will be our second visit and all the children taking part are looking forward to being part of the main arena displays.”
