The Ploughing Match
This is a popular event in our Society calendar and is regularly contested by around 75 local ploughing champions. There are classes for conventional, reversible and horse-drawn ploughs, as well as expanding classes for vintage tractors and ploughs and also vintage horticultural machinery.
Top machinery firms will be demonstrating their latest, most up-to-date, powerful, multi-furrow ploughing units which can turn over in under an hour what it would have taken a horse a day to do.
The "Match" has something for everyone with an interest in the countryside. Farming both old and new can be seen working in front of you, not just static exhibits but demonstrations and, of course, the competitions themselves. Don’t forget the highly competitive chutney and cake making competitions as well as 6 eggs and two NEW classes : Homemade Sloe Gin and Hedgerow Fruit Liqueur, yum yum!!!All food exhibits will be auctioned off at the end of day for charity. We also have a refreshment stall and a bar in which to whet your whistle.
We hope the day will feature the magnificent shire horses at work demonstrating their ploughing skills. These magnificently turned out true 'workhorses' will be decorated with ornate brass and leather harness.
Steam Ploughing will also be on show.
The Society Education Officer will be running activities with an educational theme for our many young visitors including paper making. We will also have our popular scarecrow competition. There will be a prize for the Nursery or Primary school who come up with the best scarecrow. Also you can guess the vintage farm implements and test your knowledge on the samples of grain
Adults £5, Children under 16 FREE
The day will also feature a Clay Pigeon Shoot. The proceeds of the shoot will go to the RABI.
Entries for the clay shoot, at £140 for a team of four, must be booked and paid for in advance.
