Farming Pageant will be a moving tribute to commemorate the end of the First World War
The Newbury & District & Agricultural Society will be commemorating the end of the First World War by demonstrating how agriculture has evolved over the decades at this year’s Royal County of Berkshire Show, taking place on the 15th and 16th September 2018.
During the First World War horses were sent to the front line in France to help the many soldiers that fought for our freedom. However, sad as it is, many did not return.
Since then, their absence was ever more present in the farming community so it was time to start developing. And so the revolutionary change from horses to mechanical agriculture now spurred into action!
Steam engines had been used previously during the war but they were slow, heavy and couldn’t complete the job to the standard needed. Then the tractor was introduced, which was quicker and more agile, and so agriculture was born into a new age of farming.
This year, as one of the main arena attractions we take you on a journey through the decades since the end of World War One, displaying a magnificent showcase of farming equipment and machinery. From ploughs, seed drills and hay making equipment, to the latest technology such as precision seeding, GPS crop application and yield mapping which assist getting the nutrients in the right place during the following years’ crop.
Ian Wilson, Chairman of the Show comments, “The pageant has been 2 years in the planning and several ideas have come from it. It will be a fantastic opportunity to see up close how the large modern machinery, that is often an irritating noise in a field near you or indeed in front of you on the road, works and aids in producing food. The pageant will show machines through the decades and culminate in a harvest demonstration in the main ring.”
Between shows, the machinery will be on display for visitors to view and to ask any questions.
