The Royal British Legion and Corps of Drums will be marching their way back to the Show!

The Royal British Legion and Corps of Drums Romford will be making their return to the main arena at the Royal County of Berkshire Show this year.

Established in 1952 by Peter Richardson B.E.M, the band are the longest running independent youth band in the country. They were the first youth band to appear at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and have performed alongside almost every band of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces at many different military events both in the UK and abroad.

Although called the Royal British Legion Band & Corps of Drums Romford, the band is totally independent and self-funded. The youngest member is aged nine, with an average age of 17 years. The band’s director, Ian Yeoman, was awarded the British Empire Medal by Her Majesty the Queen in 2014 for his services to youth and music.

In 2009 the band competed in the World Music Contest in Kerkrade and won two gold diploma awards whilst representing the UK. They were also the first band ever to perform a clean sweep in the 2006 TYMBA contests by winning every single trophy on offer and thus claiming the title ‘Supreme Champions’.

More recently, the band have had the honour of representing Great Britain by performing across Europe at various events, including St Petersburg Regatta, Ville-le-Grand Tattoo, Birmingham Tattoo, Sweden Tattoo, Berlin Tattoo and Europe Day in Bucharest.

The bands television presence has become more widespread, the latest being on one of the world’s most iconic theatre stages, The London Palladium, for a show entitled Tonight at the London Palladium, alongside Cyndy Lauper, Ronan Keating, Peter Andre and many more.

“The band is the most successful and traditional youth marching band on the contest field in the UK” explains Ian Yeoman, Band Director. “We hold 11 World titles from the World Music Championships held in Kirkrade, Holland and the Olympics of Bands amongst many others. We look forward to performing once again at the Royal County of Berkshire Show!”
